What's the Buzz on Mosquito Bites
July 02, 2023
Did you know the CDC and Florida Department of Health confirmed the first four cases of locally acquired malaria in Florida in the country since 2003 this past June!
Heidi Cohen, MD, medical director of Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Emergency Department, shares information to keep families safe as cases of malaria are reported in parts of Florida.
3 Tips to Protect Your Family from Mosquitoes
1. Goodbye To Standing Water
Mosquitoes love standing water, so let's dump it now! Toss those abandoned buckets and flowerpots, and keep outdoor spaces drained. No standing water means no mosquito party.
2. Stay Covered
Dressing in long sleeves and pants is a smart way to protect yourself from bites. At night, when mosquitoes are most active, it's even more important to cover up.
3. Call in the Bug Spray
Insect repellent works wonders. Remember to apply it on ankles and wrists, as mosquitoes love those spots. Embrace the power of bug spray, and watch the insects go away.
Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease, but it can be deadly if left untreated. Symptoms of malaria can include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. If you think you may have malaria, it is important to see a doctor immediately.
