I am a pediatric neurologist and neurodevelopmental pediatrician at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

As a neurologist, I care for children with conditions such as epilepsy, headache, tics, stroke, multiple sclerosis and movement disorders. In my neurodevelopment role, I care for children with developmental impairments (developmental delay, cerebral palsy); behavioral impairments (autism, ADHD); and neurogenetic conditions (genetic conditions that affect the brain leading to epilepsy, development/behavior changes, developmental regression, movement disorders, etc.).

Curiosity about human nature led me into medical school. Once there, I became fascinated with the evolution and development of the brain, especially when it comes to the constantly growing minds of children. During my residency training, I was drawn to exploring the deviations to the "expectations" of child development and behavior, and the root cause of those deviations housed in the brain.

I also love working with children and their families. I engage with each family in a true partnership. During each visit, I devote substantial time to both the child and the family. I get down on the floor at eye-level with the child – to better understand them and their needs. I encourage them to be themselves in my clinic. From the parents, I gather a sense of what the child is like at home, changes they've noticed, and other pertinent information.

I deliver news and information as I acquire it, to make sure we're all on the same page. I want to make sure your questions are answered and that we have a clear plan forward, and provide any tools or resources that may be helpful at home.

In addition to providing patient care, I'm passionate about global health, especially in Latin America. I'm actively involved in research, education and advocacy groups in the region.

Research

Clinical research is an important part of my work in exploring the neurological development of children and helping to address their needs. Currently, I’m involved in the following research projects:

• Ongoing: Andropoulos D (PI) et al: Evaluation of diagnostic yield of sedated MRI for children 0-36 months with indications of developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, new onset seizures (IRB approved 6/2017)
• Collaborative work to solidify a clinical definition of patients with SYNGAP1 mutations, one of the most common known genetic causes for autism. By studying this specific genetic change, we're attempting to define a model for a true neurodevelopmental disorder. We're also attempting to uncover clinical biomarkers useful for diagnosis and prognosis in the clinic. In addition, I have partnered and collaborated with individuals at in neurosciencelab research to further understand this gene and the processes it affects and how to fix them.
• A collaborative project with anesthesiologists and radiologists to better understand the clinical utility of MRI in developmental delay. Since we often require sedation for these MRIs – which may have implications as well in the child's development – we're exploring if and when MRIs change the course of action for patient care plans.
• A collaborative study with a pediatric neuro-ophthalmologist to study cortical visual impairment (cortical blindness), the most common cause for pediatric vision impairment in high-income countries. We hope to understand the elements that lead to improved outcomes over time, to better the interventions we may offer at an earlier stage.
• A partnership, which I created and lead, of dedicated professionals passionate about helping children across Latin America. We have more than 20 physicians across pediatric specialties in 12 institutions in the US, and are designing a needs assessment study to better define where our interventions would be in the future.
