Fetal Diagnostics and Testing

You’ll receive the most advanced testing and accurate diagnosis to help you plan for your baby’s treatment.

Making an accurate fetal diagnosis, whether based on imaging or genetic testing, can be challenging. That’s why it’s important to have your tests done by highly skilled technicians.

Our specialists have years of experience and advanced training in performing and reading fetal tests. That accuracy enables us to precisely diagnose your baby’s condition. Prenatal screenings and fetal diagnostic tests also allow us to plan more effectively for your baby’s needs after delivery.

Types of Prenatal Testing

Comprehensive evaluation and advanced testing tools enable us to accurately diagnose all types of fetal anomalies. There are two prenatal testing options: prenatal screening and prenatal diagnostic testing. Testing is the first step in diagnosis, which helps your doctor determine the right treatment options for you and your baby.

Our specialists use a variety of evaluation, imaging and testing techniques. The most common tests include:

  • Fetal heart scans such as an echocardiogram (echo)
  • Fetal ultrasound, a test that uses soundwaves to create detailed images of the fetus
  • Fetal MRI, a test that uses powerful magnets and a computer to create images of the fetus

Additional diagnostic tests may be needed, including:

  • Amniocentesis, a test that uses a small sample of amniotic fluid to look for genetic anomalies (abnormalities)
  • Chorionic villus sampling (CVS), a test that takes a piece of the placenta to check for genetic anomalies
  • Fetal blood sampling, a test that uses a blood sample from the fetus to check for genetic or blood disorders
  • Genetic testing, which assesses genes and chromosomes for any anomalies

Who Needs Prenatal Screening Tests?

Your primary obstetrician or maternal-fetal medicine doctor may recommend prenatal screening tests at different times during your pregnancy. Also, if you are over age 35 or have a family history of congenital or genetic anomalies, your doctor may suggest advanced testing.
