Performing Arts and Dance Medicine
Specialized injury prevention and treatment for dancers and performing artists
Young dancers and performing artists (musicians, acrobatic performers and gymnasts) face different physical demands than athletes. Strenuous postures, highly flexible joints and long practices increase their risk of injuries.
Experts at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital understand the needs of child and adolescent performing artists, and we’re here to help. Specially trained doctors and physical therapists diagnose, treat and prevent dance injuries.
Pediatric Performing Arts and Dance Medicine Services
We have cared for our community’s dancers and performing artists since the 1990s. Our expertise spans every type of dance and performing arts, so you can feel confident in the care your child is receiving. Highly skilled providers use research-based methods to help children get back to doing what they love.
Our team performs an evaluation that considers all possible causes of pain and discomfort. We assess bone health, nutrition, posture and technique. We may also look at your child’s shoes and other equipment to make sure it’s right for their needs.
Most clinic locations offer on-site imaging, making it easier for your child to receive a complete assessment in one visit. Orthopedic surgeons specialize in interpreting images for immediate answers on straightforward dance injuries. For complex cases, we get additional input from pediatric musculoskeletal radiologists.
Therapists work with orthopedic surgeons to design a treatment plan specific to the injury and activity. We use dance-specific techniques and may focus on improving posture or using the correct muscles. We also provide helpful tips to help performing artists avoid future injuries.
We perform assessments for young ballet dancers who are ready to go up on their toes (en pointe). Our team evaluates your child’s strength, stability, joint alignment and mental readiness for more demanding skills. If we identify gaps, we provide personalized recommendations that help your dancer make the transition while lowering injury risk.
